Dr. Barbara Gitlitz is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. She earned her MD from State University of New York at Stony Brook.  Dr. Gitlitz completed her fellowship in Hematology Oncology and Translational Investigation at UCLA, where she stayed on as an Assistant Professor.  Her clinical-translational work at UCLA involved cancer immunotherapy including one of the first trials of a Dendritic Cell Vaccine for kidney cancer patients.  Later, joining Keck School of Medicine of USC as an Associate Professor, Dr. Gitlitz spearheaded USC’s oncology effort in both lung cancer and in head and neck cancers.  This was very rewarding work for her as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment teams, working in tandem with medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, and other specialists as they all collaborated together on the best, individualized treatment for each patient. 

Dr. Gitlitz is known for her dedicated, compassionate care and has been nominated multiple times to the lists of Los Angeles’ Magazine Super Doctors, Pasadena Magazine’s Top Doctors, and US News Top Doctors.  She has also earned research grants from the American Cancer Society, the National Institute of Health, and STOP Cancer.  As a current member of the Stand Up 2 Cancer (SU2C) Epigenetics Dream Team, Dr. Gitlitz will be involved in bringing novel trials to treat cancer with combination therapies used to awaken genes that have been “turned off” by growing cancers.

Dr. Gitliz is passionate about working with scientists who are looking for methods to personalize therapies and bring clinical trials to patients.  Her philosophy is that every patients cancer has a unique molecular/genomic feature(s) that help guide their treatment plan. 

Dr. Gitlitz is a prolific and accomplished author, with multiple peer-reviewed articles published in cancer journals, as well as authoring numerous book chapters.  She is a sought-after lecturer at both national and international cancer conferences.
